The Origins of SMC: Pioneers in Machining and Welded Fabrication

Founded in 1981 by seven colleagues who worked together in the maintenance department of a textile company, Société de Mécanique Champenoise, based in Romilly-sur-Seine, specialises in precision machining and welded fabrication.

Two years after it was founded, SMC moved to its current, more spacious premises on rue Milford Haven.

In its early years, SMC focused on the textile sector, but over time it diversified to serve regional companies in fields as varied as aerospace, space and household appliances.

The company acquired its first CNC lathe in 1990, a major milestone in the development of its technological capabilities.

The implementation of an ERP system in 2004 improved resource management.

Isabelle DUMANGE, a graduate engineer from Arts et Métiers, bought the company in 2016.

In 2021, Isabelle joined forces with an employee of Société d’Études du Val d’Armance (SEVA) to acquire this engineering design office. This enables them to offer SMC and SEVA customers services ranging from design to the manufacture of mechanical parts and assemblies.

SMC Joins Forces with Société d’Applications Mécaniques

Founded in 1981 in Rosières-près-Troyes, Société d’Applications Mécaniques (SAM) also specialises in precision machining and the production of complex parts for the metalworking industry. In the 1990s, SAM acquired its first CNC lathe and milling machine, followed in 2014 by a coordinate measuring machine (CMM). These technology investments enabled SAM to expand into sectors such as automotive and energy, and to manufacture high-precision components for rotating machinery. In 2019, SAM achieved ISO 9001 certification, strengthening its reputation for quality and reliability.

Isabelle DUMANGE bought the company in 2021 following the retirement of its managing director.

SMC and SAM Merger: Synergies and Growth

SMC and SAM merged in 2023 to build technical, administrative and commercial synergies, with the aim of meeting their customers’ expectations even more effectively. The new entity, still named SMC, retains both production sites and employs 26 people, with a turnover of €2.8 million.
